What Makes Fencing in Largo Different

Largo is a mix of older lots near downtown, newer subdivisions, and manufactured-home and 55+ communities, and the rules that apply can change from one block to the next. Here's what we check before we quote.

City of Largo or Unincorporated Pinellas?

A Largo mailing address doesn't always mean the City of Largo. Many homes with Largo addresses sit in unincorporated Pinellas County, which has different fence rules (see our Pinellas County fence page). We check your parcel's jurisdiction before we quote, so the permit and height rules we follow are the right ones.

Smaller, Older Lots Near Downtown

Around West Bay Drive and the streets near Largo Central Park, lots tend to be tighter and front yards shallow. That puts more of the fence under the 4-foot front-yard limit, and corner lots are treated as having two front yards.

Manufactured-Home & 55+ Communities

Largo has many manufactured-home parks and age-restricted communities with their own park or HOA rules. Many limit fence height, style or color. Bring the community's rules to your estimate and we'll spec to match.

Gulf Breezes, Inland Soil

Most of Largo sits a few miles from the Gulf, so salt air is milder than on the beaches. Neighborhoods west toward Belleair Bluffs and the Intracoastal still benefit from powder-coated aluminum, vinyl and stainless or galvanized hardware.

Largo Fence Permits & Code

  • Permits: the City of Largo requires a building permit to install, repair or replace fences. The application includes a survey or site plan showing where the fence goes, its height, material and approximate length, even when you're replacing a fence in the same spot. A small like-for-like repair exemption exists for single-family homes (up to 10 linear feet of fence and gates up to 6 feet). Pool barrier fences and gates are never exempt. Where a permit's required, we pull it for you.
  • Height: up to 6 feet in side and rear yards and 4 feet in front yards for single-family homes. A corner lot counts as having two front yards, so both street sides max out at 4 feet.
  • Placement: fences can go up to the property line if height and sight-visibility rules are met, and must stay at least 2 feet from sidewalks.
  • Materials: the city allows wood, vinyl, aluminum, chain link, stone, brick and finished block for residential fences.
  • Pools: Florida's pool barrier law requires a barrier at least 4 feet tall with self-closing, self-latching gates.
  • Utilities: we call Sunshine 811 for locates before any post hole goes in.
